HAFS 2003. Diary from the three day mountain trip.
We woke at 7.00. Phil checked all the groups luggages and told us how to pack and what we need for the 3 days trip.
We had too small backpacks and he found us some bigger backbags. We have to carry up 2 tents for mountaneering groups and all the food for these days.
Julien had a black plastic bag around his backpack and two holes in it for the back straps, we laughed so much.
We started walking at 1pm from Rivedal. The first 500m was hard, we made breaks because we had to wait for Anne and Matheiu. The walking was steep for estonians with some steep climbs and wet grass. On the way we made 4 or 5 stops for resting.
Once we met a man who was running in the hill as if training for a race. The last steep section was really hard for everyone, we didn't want to walk any more but the cabin was only 5 minutes away.
Our faces were so happy when we arrived at the cabin, Niperbu, it is about 500m above sea level.
We rested for 10 minutes and leaders started to make dinner.
The whole trip took five hours. Phil told us he could do this trip in 1hr and 45 mins. We put up our tents and we had some soup, then we rested a while and then after an hour we got or next lot of food. We were so tired, everyone had around 10-20kg on their shoulders and we got into our tents around 2300hrs.
We got to sleep as long as we wanted, because the day before was very exhausting and we were tired. We had breakfast at 1200, we had been up 2 hrs but everyone was still sleepy so we went back to sleep. We woke up for our next meal.
After eating and washing the dishes we had decide what to do for the afternoon. We had 3 choices: to go fishing, walk around the lake or to climb to the top of the mountain. Everyone had to choose something.
The hikers were the first to return and the fishermen the last to come back. Un fortunately they didnt have any luck with catching fish. Then we drank hot tea and coffee and played cards.
Despite the water being really cold some crazy people went for a swim not mentioning any names (Janar, Solveig and Heli). Then in the evening after eating we chatted a little bit and then it was time to go to sleep yet again. In conclusion it was an intersting but sleepy day.
The group was really ignited by Phil: he had told us that we had to get up at 6 am but reqlly we got up at 7 am. Some people were cold in the tent during the night. Solveig was the first
to wake up and she walked to the cabin to see what was going on but all the leaders (EXCEPT Heli) and participants were sleeping. So she had the task of waking up all the group. The leaders said: “you don't get breakifast until the tents are down”. Taking down tents was easier than putting them up. We took down the big tent first, then the small tent. We had to carry all the backbags to the cabin, because we needed to find a place for the food we had left. We thought packing would be easier because we had eaten nearly all the food but we were mistaken, becaurse we couldn't pack so neatly so the bqags were even bigger!
After breakfast, we had pancakes (not enough) and we were on our way again. We started walking at 10.00 a .m.
we hoped our spirit would be ready for some hard walking but they weewn't. In front of the group marched the Estonians, Maris, Jaanika, Janar, Erasmus and one Norwegian girl, Solveig (she was the only Norwegian in the mountain group). The French couldn't keep up with the tempo of the Estonians, Norwegian and Italians.
Experienced people had told us: don't go travelling with new clothes” but humans only belive when they have experienced it for themselves. Two Estonians found out – one of them couldn't take lony strides (because she had to hold her trouses to keep them up) and the others trouses were splitat at the seams from playinf a game.
On the way back we got some rain but not too much. The total time to get down the mountain was 4,5 hours. It was
mosty wet and soft walking. Never the less, we liked crossing the river, we had to help each other and step in river.
When we came down the mountain our shoulders were so tired. Walking on the road, we saw an uphill section and felt this is impossible, we dragged our feet because we couldn't lift them. Every time we had a break Phil kept our spirit up by feeding us chocolade, nuts and raisins.
In the end we found the bus stop at 14.30. We lay on the grass and enjoyed every minute of rest – no backbags! At 15.00 we took the bus to Askvoll harbor. We run to the
toilets, it was so nice to have a hot wash and have flushing toilets. It s unbelivable how quikly humans have got used to hot water showers and flushing toilets.
At the harbor we met the climbing group who we hadn't seen 3 days. We run to see them to hug them and say “How are you”. On the way to Krakhella and Stokkevag we talked about what we had done over the last three days.
In Estonia the highest place Suur-Munamagi is 318 m high but walking in Norway is so different.
All the Estonians were very pleased to have spent three days in the mountains. God tur
